Our History
Our History

In September of 1948, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange founded and staffed Nativity Catholic School in Torrance, California, to serve the educational needs of families in the South Bay area. At that time, the campus included one building which contained eight classrooms for grades one through eight, a large grassy area and a blacktop with benches. In 1951, a two-story building was constructed adjacent to the first building which added eight additional classrooms to the campus. Kindergarten was introduced in 1977, expanding the number of classes to nine, and in 2013 the school added a TK Class. Currently the campus consists of ten homeroom classrooms for grades TK through eight, a daycare and separate rooms for art and robotics, a faculty lunchroom, a front office, and resource/STEP office.
From 1970 until 1974, Nativity Catholic School was staffed by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and lay faculty. Since 1974, the school has been staffed primarily by lay Catholic educators. Today, we continue to uphold the school’s mission in educating the students in mind, body and spirit, in hopes to promulgate the traditions and Catholic faith into the future. This past school year 2023-24, NativityCatholic School has been blessed with the opportunity to provide a quality Catholic education to thousands of students for over 75 years.
